Fanny Price comes from very humble surroundings to be placed among her wealthy cousins, the Bertrams. Here she is faced with moral dilemmas by which she stands to lose their friendship. Only Sir Thomas Bertram and his younger son Edmund value her, but her situation becomes unbearable when she refuses what Sir Thomas considers a good match: Henry Crawford, unprincipled brother of the worldly Mary.
